In your last paragraph you said that you want to try and switch your viewpoint on social media. While this is still using social media as a tool, I tried an activity in my class to see if I could harness my students use of twitter, facebook, and text messages. that perhaps you can try. I wanted them to see that you can use social media for more than communicating with friends. I challenged them to write 25 word complete stories. This is the average length of a twitter message or a text message. The students were very successful in the first try. We then used the same activity on a content based lesson where they had to write a story about life in an industrial revolution era factory. They then tweeted their story to our class twitter feed. It worked pretty well, and the student feedback was positive.

I also feel like I am on step one. I can make a lot of excuses as to why but the truth is, change is hard. However, if we are to prepare our students to think critically and create change, we must change the way we teach. It is difficult to teach students to analyze and think critically about the information they consume, but that is exactly what we must do in order to fully prepare them for the future.
